so while sitting at work on "light duties" ive been typing out all of our procedures for everything, just handed a bunch in (on a portable hard drive) and my boss asked me why there were so many spelling errors...
so i gave him 2 reasons...

1. i didn't realize spell check wasnt installed on word on my computer
2. i'm a fabricator, i cant even spell fabricator without spell-check

luckily firefox has built in spell check

At least he isn't an engineer, they know how to design it, build it, put it together but could not tell you how it works or what it does in simple laymen terms then wonder why we can't follow the simple 200 page instruction book

I deal with engineers all the time..........sure they can design it but that doesn't mean it can be built the way they think. Personally I think some of them need to work in the field for a couple yrs first before or during there schooling.

Yup I feel the same way I've ever only met one engineer in my 18 yrs in the pulp industry that came to the field operators and asked them how xx design would work and how accessible it old be for us he was a very popular engineer

Yep, 13 years in the framing industry and the engineers stuff works on their paper, but it won't work in the field and getting them to change it is like pulling teeth.

I am lucky that I deal with the same engineers all the time and when changes need to be made I make them and they have to adopt it to there prints. They have learned that after 20+ yrs doing what I do that sometime I am the smart one not them lol.

Stay clear..... this Bear bites off limbs!!

The ones I work with will make their own changes and ignore my suggestions... Then 2 months down the road when they realize their changes didn't work they change it to how I advised but they take the credit....

Speaking as an engineer I think all fabricators should have to go to engineering school. That way we'd all be able to communicate! It can be difficult sometimes to communicate the tolerances that need to be observed, processes that need to happen as designed etc.

Zoaelite 08-27-2013 09:25 PM

Speaking as a retailer both Fabricators and Engineers should try out my profession .

How easy it is to take your stress out on the poor customer service rep.

canadianbudz604 08-28-2013 01:07 AM

Customer service

I wouldn't last an hour as a customer service rep. Too long in construction I have no mouth filter and a short temper lol

+1 although I'd be happy with them just going to school in general then maybe they wouldn't be so eager to blame all their problems on someone else. I can't spell, I can't read fractions, I can't read drawings, what does mm stand for?.... Damn engineer!

sphelps 08-28-2013 01:49 AM

All jokes a side there are good engineers and plenty of terrible ones to, no different than fabricators or any other profession (trust me I could tell some stories). All the engineers I work with directly have plenty of field experience, some more than office. I myself started in manufacturing, first in a machine shop then in heavy equipment, now in oil in gas I often go to site to address issues hands on. This is pretty typical for many engineers, some universities even require field or shop experience.

As someone that sells to structural fabricators on a daily basis I get to feel a little of their frustration when a column in the 14"x14" family is called for. Sure I can get it.....but you want it when??? Lol. What does mm mean? Now that's funny..... Well actually kind of scary.

That is one thing I would never say I understand completely is the major math factor. I would have loved to go take engineering then I could have charged a helz of a lot more fore my time.

I blame that all on the Structual Metals Handbook for Engineers, I have the last 2 additions & there are so many items that are not available to Canada or at all anywhere in North America.

Those are some of the BC & East Coast imports  I have work in many shops & unions jobs & there are many many so called welder who think they are fabricators that can't even build a square box from a piece of square tube. :surprise:

gregzz4 08-28-2013 04:35 AM

Coming originally from an Automotive background, I used to think Engineers would wake in the middle of the night, or just stay up nights, and think about ways to make servicing things difficult
I often would think 'cmon, what where you thinking when you designed this ?

So decided to go see a movie tonight (first time with no kids in awhile) and walking from the van to the theatre, my leg went "pop"... Dropped me to the ground, got up and now my leg feel 100x better. I can even walk up stairs normally now

Guess something was somewhere it wasn't supposed to be

But what movie did you see??

Also, did you manage to kill anything on the ride back?

SeaHorse_Fanatic 09-02-2013 06:01 AM

You might have had some torn cartilage jamming your knee joint and it shifted. I've had that in the past. Glad you're feeling better.

Is it Ernie and Bert, or Bert an Ernie? What a conundrum.

If you ask Bert then it's "Bert and Ernie." If you ask Ernie he'll tell you to ask Bert, so it's probably "Bert and Ernie."

The question you really should be asking is, why does Ernie have Bert's banana in his ear?!?!

'Musa' found it aPEELing for some reason. Ernie is a loose cannon that's for sure.

SanguinesDream 09-04-2013 07:18 AM

On a completely unrelated Muppet topic, it would be really great if you could put your hands together and ask the big Sky Daddy for a peaceful night for me without seizures all night long like last night. TIA!

The hum of mp40s is kind of nice when your power has been out for three hours.

No issues at all. My power goes out all the time. Between the battery back-up and a 4000W generator, I can handle it pretty smoothly.
