I am a slave to the potato chip and must try all the new flavours....... Run, don't walk if you see Grill cheese and ketchup. I can't even find the words to describe.

If keeping Canreef around means introducing a membership fee so be it.

Make it tiered and depending which tier you fall grants you permissions for the forum.

As an example. Prices are just pulled out of my arse. Same with the per month thing.. just an example.

$5/month Tier 1 - General browsing
$10/month Tier 2 - General browsing/Post a Build Thread/Browsing Marketplace
$15/month Tier 3 - Full Access. Post/Make Threads in Marketplace, etc.

If the site owner doesn't want to incorporate a Membership Fee that's fine, but maybe consider a Paypal/Fundit Donation link somewhere that is clearly visible. Some people may not donate at all and that's fine but I bet some people would donate monthly, even if it was only $5-10. It would be extra income to help offset costs and take some of the responsibility off the Vendors who choose to be on here and help keep their costs down.

We have that sort of system on my Gaming Clans forum and it works well.

Bringing on a monthly user fee for general browsing would likely result in a 80-90% drop in users immediately.

I agree that it should not be the sole responsibility of the vendor sponsors to keep the site running. I understand that CanReef is a business, however costs on running a forum of this size (relatively small) is quite inexpensive.

For 6 years I ran a forum with over 50k members and it cost me $50 per month for basic site hosting and bandwidth. Although I did not run the site to make profit, there was an obvious need to raise funds to sustain the site.
I used a simple formula to financially support the site

General Users: free
Browsing Marketplace: free
Posting threads on marketplace: $10/year
VIP membership (gave access to post in market, and site image hosting, acces to VIP forums) :$20/yr

This was more than enough to cover the costs and saw little to no user decline. Excess monies were used to upgrade site features and do other things like have giveaways.

Should CanReef want to bring on more sponsors or bring back sponsors, then couple this method with lower sponsor fees.

You'd be surprised how much money you can bring in with such an simple system.

banditpowdercoat 08-11-2013 06:55 AM

Like site's of my other interests, who started charging fee's. I won't be paying. Just saying. The internet is not about making money. If you need money to run the site, that's what sponsors and payed advertisemts etc. And I DO pay on some of my other sites for Advertisement/selling rights. NOT for browsing and chatting and sharing knowledge. That should NEVER be charged for

The Boursin I'm currently eating expired on Dec 2, 2012. Hmm...why has it not gone bad?

Best thing I've ever done... Debt consolidation

Went from 23% interest to 3.25%

Finally starting to learn what it is like to have good credit and new it will be a lot easier to get that mortgage I've been wanting

Biggest regret in life ATM is having been a dumb teenager when it came to money.

But hey, if I don't make mistakes how am I gonna learn?

Ps: tapatalk 2 sucks

^^^ Lol.

I'd like some wages with some real purchasing power please. I've been redoing my annual budget and yeah, cost of living is really really high. I cannot get over how expensive it is to put a roof over my head in this city (Calgary). This isn't sustainable for society.

You need to shack up with some big burly aquarist. Split the cost of living in two.

Update: broke my fibula in my left leg and sprained my knee, and some muscle damage to my thigh(everywhere on it) and I can't lift my foot off the ground under its own power

daplatapus 08-21-2013 01:38 PM

Du'oh! That sucks man. Well, at least you'll get some time to sit in front of your tank... :)

IanWR 08-21-2013 02:05 PM

Lord that sounds painful! How long is the healing process expected to be? Do you get/have to be off work that whole time? I just hope you come out of this without some permanent damage. :(

+1 .. I kind of wonder how far things will go before something gives.

It's actually pretty scary. I'm one half of a two person household and we both bring home decent coin and at the end of the day after all the bills are paid and money is put away for retirement my thought is now what? There isn't much money left to do anything without taking on additional debt or playing Keeping up with the Jones'.

I watch my peers get raises and bonuses and run out and spend them on bigger houses and newer cars and I wonder how I can't avoid this new normal of debt, debt, debt.

I feel most saddened though for my female peers as I'm becoming more and more aware of how this is negatively impacting their opportunities to start families. I have three friends who have all cited their lagging "middle" class incomes as their barrier to being able to consider children. It's really hard to function on a single income here and the apparentness of such is creeping into my daily life more and more.

You can simply not go out and buy a new house and/or car  In other words, who the frak cares with the Jones' are doing. Do your own thang

Agreed, and I don't, but wow is it ever the trend at least downtown. Although it is often sometimes the trend is to forget to check your skirt isn't tucked into your panties though...so yeah...

Shouldn't be anything permanent, the muscle damage hurts more than the fractured bone especially in the pelvic area. ATM my muscles arnt strong enough to move my leg

Don't get me wrong, I do agree that cost of living is going up a lot faster than it traditionally has, for various reasons. I do also see the same trend that you mentioned about keeping up with the Jones'. Last year one of our friends purchased a camping trailer. Then this year another friend bought one but a much more expensive one with more bells and whistles. Now the original friend who got one wants to sell theirs to upgrade. At a dinner table last weekend both friends asked me when I would be getting a camping trailer. WTF?? I'm perfectly happy with my 15 year old camping TENT, thank you very much.

The new term is called "Working Poor" because it is so easy to get virtually anything you want on credit and the problem is most families on a dual income average $85-120,000 per year which in therory should be enough for most people to live off of but mortgage, usually 2-4 credit cards, line of credit, Store credit/debit cards, vacations, loans and your standard bills all add up to the point where you can't afford to live henceforth the tem "working poor".

Sadly I know so many people like this including my brother and his wife they think they are being money smart but have already declared bankrupcy once and are close to it again yet its not their fault its the banks fault as they tell me

It kinda boggles my mind actually. Excuse me for playing the 'old-man card', but when I was growing up and I didn't have enough money to buy that new G.I. Joe super aircraft carrier, I did one of two things. 1. Accepted that I can't afford it and move on. 2. Asked my buddies if I could do their newspaper routes while they were on vacation so that I could pick up some extra cash. I wonder if part of the problem is that some people are blurring the lines between needs and wants. If you focus on living with what you need, life isn't actually all that uncomfortable.

For the record, I am an immigrant whos parents came to Canada with absolutely nothing but the shirts on their backs and young children in tow. I know all about living at the poverty level while mostly all of my peers lived well above the poverty level.

SeaHorse_Fanatic 08-21-2013 08:07 PM

Sorry to hear about your leg my friend. Hope you heal well & fast Tyler.

BTW, got the rabbitfish yesterday & look good.
