I am surprised that you ditched the GHL Mitras. You were having more success with them than anyone else I have ever seen.

It will be interesting to see the changes in coloration.

Nice switch Wayne! Tank is looking better than ever!

I almost didn't to be honest... There was another Mitras on sale here on Canreef a couple weeks ago... I wanted another one for the centre of the tank... Haven't heard back from the seller.... Did me a huge favor. just 7 days in and I am noticing a few positive changes already.

Rich, thank you for your support! I'm looking forward to your new build soon and next time you come over to the island don't forget to bring your clippers.

Rice Reef 10-22-2014 01:12 AM

One week update: noticing more new colors that had been washed out under the LEDs. The red planet in the middle had generally been a slow grower... Not anymore. The same can be said for the shortcake and the blue tenius.

Greg, thanks again! Really liking the new lights. I'm seeing some very obvious new growth on a few pieces where they did nothing or very little under the LeDs. Still too soon to really judge but it's on the right track!

Light schedule

I've been asked to share my light schedule so here goes... Hope it is ok as I am still a newbie with the t5s...

This is my LED schedule
http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps61aohic0.jpg

The T5 schedule- yellow represents channel 2 and Orange: channel 1
http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps6gzynk3t.jpg

For the LED with the yellow dot, this is a custom setting...

And for the pink dot, also a custom setting...

I'll try and post a YouTube vid of the light cycle later.

not saying colors change, however lock at this video, and you see what only the bulb will do for you (just some interesting comparison)

Wayne, some nice growth on your sps, also a well played move picking up the hybrid... Your colors will surely improve overtime. I've always enjoyed looking at sps under T5, the colors remind me of cosmic bowling where everything glows and pops. Looking foward to more pics as time progresses.

Chris, thanks! It's just been a bit over two weeks and I finally get it! Lol. There is just no substitution for t5. The mitras came close but that's where it ends. The hybrids comes with LEDs and are great for supplementing themt5s. What I am seeing are not necessary new colours but colours that had been washed out under the LEDs.

Anyways, here are a few new macros with the hybrids... Pics are so much warmer then just LEDs.

Tank of the month..........

The change over from pure LED to T5 and LED has been quite positive. One coral that has been most noticeable is the DV Northern Delight....

Under the Mitras...

Under the ATI Hybrid...

Seems to have more polyp extension under mitras but the color is so much better.

Maybe 'cause those poor polyps were starving for 'real' light

I bought my T5s when they were popular, MHs were still in, and LEDs were just coming around
I'll say I'm glad I've stuck with them, even though they cost me a couple frags a year in bulbs ...

But I'm constantly thinking about MHs for my tank due to slower-growing stuff

Your poop is looking awesome Wayner
If I had some extra dough, I'd take a ferry and raid your tank

riceboy 11-14-2014 05:02 AM

Don't think it's more polyp extension but more of more light spread evenly over the whole coral. With led I find it more directional so all corals will be bright and colorful from the top down, but from the sides or underneath where the corals are shaded they tend to be more brown. I have noticed the same thing when having just led. And now supplimenting with 4 t5 the colors are more visible from the side where I tend to look at the tank most. Just my 2 cent. Wicked pics and beautiful colors by the way. You must have one of the best collections besides sweet ride and Darryl lol.

Greg, you're the smart one... Look at how much I have wasted on lights....
If you are looking for anything in particular Lmk... I can always bring it over the next time I'm visiting Rich or Peter.

I think you're right about the lights. I've tried as much as I can with thr LEDs but that is as far as it goes. This is my first attempt with t5 and ain't looking back... And thank you for the compilement.... Don't think I'm anywhere close to those guys... Always trying and that is about as close as it gets... The sps I have is 99% East Coast.... I'm sure you recognize quite a few pieces... 😄. Thanks to MJC, Frag Box, Canada Corals and Incredible Aquariums... ☺️

I've seen his tank in person a few times and his pictures are true to lifE. The corals are that bright and healthy. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing this tank in person will attest to his pictures. He works tirelessly on his tank and it shows in his corals.

Bit of a compliment with a bit of a dig, no??

Just kidding.
It is a tank of the century though
