A little to update, got a Profilux 2 plus controller but still have to hook it up. 2 new 48" dual 250w MH with dual T5's and moon light, on the tank and look great. Picked up some retro fit T5's with dimmable ballasts and Profilux power bar. Also bought a new little skimmer, arrived a couple days ago but still have to get it running
I introduce to you my Octopus RPS-3000 RC........ http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/aba0bcb7.jpg Found out that my McCorskers Flasher wrasse ( hope that's right ) is still alive and well in my rocks. I think I might have to remove my 6line wrasse  but that might bring the Flasher out more often and allow me to get some other wrasse. Here's a few pic's of some of my zoa's: http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/6be9cb4d.jpg http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/ed951613.jpg http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/0ee3b37c.jpg http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/463e0656.jpg |

So today I got the big a$$ skimmer online, just waiting for it to brake in and start pulling gunk out of the water.
Also hooked up my Profilux Plus 2 controller, temp probe online and working nicely as well as the Ph prob. And to my surprise my Ph is just a wee bit high......must correct this asap. |
I must say I am really happy with the new skimmer, water is looking cleaner and it was real easy to get it dialed in.
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...d/a1d01b1f.jpg Picked up a few new residents for the tank from a fellow canreefer that was selling there tank. Scopas Tang http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/daab262a.jpg Engineer Goby http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/1f2d37dd.jpg http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/328f53db.jpg Lg Scribbled Rabbit http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/845693f0.jpg Pink Spotted Watchmen Goby http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/7b9209c9.jpg http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/6a9de85c.jpg Matted Filefish, haven't seen this little guy do anything but swim end to end at the back of the tank. It's a bad pic because it never stops doing laps. And some proof that my McCorskers Flasher Wrasse is still around. http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/77f96a33.jpg |
Almost forgot this little fella, but I think I might have to set up a little nano for just him and take it to my office.
http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/b331cb41.jpg And yet another pic of my Flasher Wrasse, SO HAPPY  that it showed up. http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/e86a564e.jpg |

Yes I am aware of that but it have yet to even figure out that there is a whole lot a tank out there to explore.

Just a few shots of a couple of my bigger pieces, one pic is really crappy as my closed loop decided to do something funky all of a sudden throwing sand into the water column.
Devils Hand http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/dc43f2db.jpg Sinulara finger leather http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/x...h/b4d57293.jpg And the one coral I was so afraid to try because they are very expensive IMO but received a great deal on it so I said what the hell. It's a very nice tank, Grizz ! How can you prevent the fish from not jumping out with your 18" shallow tank ? Did you cover your top with something ?
|
not sure if its the same for everyone but i tried 3 times to grow sps and the 3rd time i took out my leathers and sps is growing fine , the first 2 times i couldnt grow it and i had a few people tell me that leathers produce a chemical that reacts badly with sps

I'm by no means an sps expert, far from it, but mine are doing pretty darn good. I credit this to doing 20% water changes every 2 weeks without fail. I was a real lazy water changer in the past but ever since I ventured into the world of sps, realized this is something you need to do.

Get some ROX carbon from BRS. BRS is really the only place you can get it from and trust me once you go ROX there is no other you'll go to afterward. I only wish some of our more local vendors would bring it in (HINT HINT ... er, AGAIN, because it's not like I haven't brought this up before).
But Doug is right, get some carbon on there. It's mandatory IMO. Read this for a good description of "why": http://joejaworski.wordpress.com/200...k-need-carbon/ Doug is probably also right in that the reason for your SPS troubles are your leathers. In general these two types do not mix well at all. With maybe only a few exceptions you don't really find SPS and leathers in the same reefs in the wild and that probably tells us something. And it's not just leathers. Softeys in general, macro algaes, leathers are just among the stronger one who participate in allelopathy ("chemical warfare"). You can mitigate this some by using more carbon but there will be a point where it's sometimes better to pick your favourite kinds and focus on that for a single tank. There are not many "mixed coral garden" that last very long and it is because there are just too many interactions going on that we can't really see or do much about. But yeah, I agree. Start with some carbon and go from there. (See if you can get the ROX http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/...-carbon-1.html ... well worth it.) |
I've got 5 gallons of ROX here. If you ever make it by to pick up those monti's I could set you up with some to try out before ordering from BRS.
