Hows that overflow treating ya? was it hard to figure out flow rates for your return pump?

Chase31 02-24-2010 02:10 PM

the overflow was pretty much plug and play, added a ball valve to the overflow to quiet it down, that overflow is rated for about 600GPH and my pump is only around 300-400GPH so its not hard, thats why i have the ball valve just turned a fraction

This morning i put my hand into the tank to play with one of the corals and my cleaner shrimp came out and felt me a bit with his feelers then started to eat off my hand :P

Unless you have an emergency overflow, I would not restrict your drain at all in case your drain somehow gets clogged. This happens and many people have had floods because of this. There are other ways to quiet the drain down. Search durso, or stockman standpipes. These are a couple of ways to quiet the drains down without restricting the drain. (Just don't want your mother ticked off about the hobby cause of a flood on her floor )

lol im not to worryed as the ball valve is only turned 1/8th of an inch from the fully open position otherwise it makes a really loud sucking noise

the problem with restricting the overflow at all with a ball valve, is that if something like a snail or fish or anything large enters your overflow pipe it well get caught on the ball valve and then block or restrict the overflow.
Without an emergency overflow to then take the rest of the flow, your return pump will drain your sump, overfill your tank, flood your parents house and possibly burn out (from running dry) your return pump.
