I bought a bench/step ladder just for the tank that folds up well but it dosent hurt to have some reach to go with it.... like that scene from duece bigalow..... it still tends to get a bit nipply when im in there

kien 11-14-2011 09:46 PM

Hey, so today I emailed a photo to a friend and the picture was 404KB!

lastlight 11-22-2011 11:43 PM

After sitting in the tank on a salt bucket and freezing my @$$ off the scape is done! Sand and a test frag as well (had PE almost right away so that's a good sign).

Only have a 2 year old+ phoenix over the tank for kicks till the rest of my gear arrives. Made taking shots tough so I had to turn on the fugly florescents. Room's still FULL of junk too so picture-taking room's at a premium :twised:

+1 Gonna look terrific with some large SPS colonies and fishes swimming around those islands.

Scaping looks sweet, & it's good to see it with light above it. Even though it's just one, it gives reason to believe when the tank is all properly lit up that having a white tank room won't be so bad. I'm kinda considering repainting the inside of mine blue, because I worry about the aesthetics of a white backdrop.

lastlight 11-23-2011 12:50 AM

Thx!

I'll still be adding some standalone rocks to build things outward a bit on the sand in a few spots. I have to wait to incorporate all the rocks covered in coral first. I may refrag some stuff too I won't have a clue I don't think until I'm doing it. Nervous!

fishytime 11-23-2011 12:55 AM

Its alive!!!!!.......alive!!!!!

Just a note that the first shot had only the phoenix on. The rest of the shots had the fishroom lit. You can see in the first pic you get almost the same effect as a black bg (which always seems to give me more of a dark grey look when a tank is lit. With the wall being far enough back it actually has that dark greyish look to it but that might change when all the lights are on (with decent reflectors I might add). The backdrop might appear as a slightly lighter gray? My lights are also going to be closer to the front of the tank to help keep the back looking darker.

I was considering some magnet mounts for some sheets of black corrugated plastic for removal. I want to be able to magfloat the back of this tank with ease. I might even leave it totally open. It seems a lot of things with this build are solve as you get there

So is my luck!

Before I added salt (and knowing reef crystals is low for Mg) I just grabbed my container of MG and dumped it all in! Was maybe 3/4 of a gallon? I knew I'd need at least that much. Anyways did my tests tonight:

Ca - 450 (Can't help it RC is high for Ca)
Alk - 9
Mg - 1400 (on the nose!)

So I thought why not toss a frag in. It's showtime!

lastlight 11-23-2011 02:46 AM

Ok maybe I am on drugs it's not grey at all. On my screen this is exactly what she looks like (I slapped some rails together so I could rotate the fixture and power on BOTH crappy old phoenix bulbs). I'm doubtful I'll put anything behind the tank I really like it. I will need to tidy my cables of course to run along my bracing...

looks blue over here. Looks good. Thx.

Lance 11-23-2011 02:55 AM

I like it without a background.

Well there ya have it. Now I literally can't use a background. Thanks for making that easy bro =)

On another note I really wish photos gave a better sense of scale. The large pile/pillar is massive/menacing but you don't get that vibe staring at the pic.

fishytime 11-23-2011 03:51 AM

except now you have to keep the back glass clean:razz:

I tried my best on the current tank but without magnet access it's so tough. I'm certainly dedicated enough to do it... I wasn't dedicated enough to kent-scrape it to the same level tho. My tank right now is solid coraline!

Leah 11-26-2011 03:07 PM

What a horrible job you did on the aquascaping there Brett. Thought with all your experience with it...tank would be stellar.

Oh crap! Haven't had enough coffee yet. He!he! Note to self coffee first... then Canreef.

*Edit* Okay I am just very dang jealous  ...Tank is STELLAR!!! Love the aquascaping.... can't wait to see it full.

By the way If you are having second thoughts about all that water flooding your basement and all that damage it could potentially cause...I would be happy to help you out by taking the tank off your hands.

But do you have any seahorses for your tank.

Delphinus 11-26-2011 03:22 PM

I think the only way that tank is coming out of that basement is by first taking the house off the foundations and then lifting the tank out that way!!!

lastlight 11-26-2011 04:10 PM

Was mounting corals till 4am and 6 hours later I'm in line to see Santa at the mall... And you guys are still funny lol ;)

Madreefer 11-26-2011 04:23 PM

Brett, get your but off of Santa's lap! Get home and post pictures of the tank.... and none of you sitting on him either...please and thanks.

lastlight 11-26-2011 04:45 PM

Ok the kid in front of us had his crappy diaper leak on santa. They're cleaning the Kringle up for us haha.

jorjef 11-26-2011 05:29 PM

And santa starts on the vodka after leaking little johnny

lastlight 11-28-2011 02:22 AM

Here's an iphone video with almost all the livestock transferred. I say almost because I spent some crazy hours detailing every rock to leave my old tank and picked off valonia, screwered the crap outta aiptasia and snapped, chopped and scraped the sps I didn't want in the new tank (mostly m. confusa and a small army of green digi). There is currently not a single bit of valonia in here I'm enjoying how that looks for at least a day I hope lol.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7sjpgNtVEc

I tried out youtube's stabilization filter but it's made things even more choppy and spastic sorry about that!

If you watch the whole thing you'll see I've abandoned drawer slides finally in favour of a pvc light rack. It allows me to slide each light individually front-to-back and side-to-side. Lovin' it!

Still to do:

- cleanup wiring
- install dusk/dawn t5s, auto top off, doser, and new gfo/carbon reactors
- sort out access and use of the 3 water barrels

Delphinus 11-28-2011 02:31 AM

Looking fantastic! All that was in that old tank? Hahaha you're pretty much full!

I know! I have zero clue how it all did fit in the old one lol. The tank is indeed full... the important thing though is that everything has room to grow! I have lots of LPS/zoa space but don't see many new sps frags in my future. I nearly mounted my hollywood stunner onto the wall again but chose to dedicate a very large area at the end to it. That decision didn't help any

Skimmerking 11-28-2011 02:36 AM

brett that tanks looks amazing man, and you have no braces do you just euro brace/ what thickness is the glass

Zoaelite 11-28-2011 02:47 AM

Time to mail order some brides for your Squareback , lookin amazing Brett!

Coralgurl 11-28-2011 02:54 AM

Wow, you've done a great job! Looks amazing!
