Dow Chemical Co. said Thursday it intends to sell part of its raw plastics businesses to Kuwait's state-run oil company in turn for $9.5 billion and the creation of a 50-50 joint venture, giving the largest U.S. chemical company greater access to emerging growth markets and the petrochemical materials used in its products. The long-awaited deal pushed Dow's (USOW) stock up more than 9% in earlier trade. Shares closed 6.3% higher at $44.39. Dow Chief Executive Andrew Liveris framed the joint venture with Petrochemical Industries Co., a subsidiary of state-run Kuwait Petroleum Corp., as one akin to an integrated oil company, such as Exxon Mobil.
