Have you ever found yourself in a situation when you really needed to plug some electronic device into your car but that device only had a normal household plug? In this case, you couldn't plug the device into the cigarette lighter of your car because the energy coming out of that plug does not go over 12 DV volts whereas the energy needed to power a regular household item requires 120 AC volts.
